My sensei has also said you should always win the first exchange if you are the higher ranked person in keiko. It is by doing this that you make them take you seriously as an opponent even though you may be making opening/giving them chances.

Answer: Thanks for your comment. It is said, "Shodachi wo toru (Win your shodachi [first exchange lit. the first cut])". You are right about that. Thanks for the additional input, mate!
