Shinai Weight

I read that for kendo competitions, there is a rule based on competitors' ages and if M or F, that their shinai must be of a certain weight. However, if it's a grading (rank) test: is a specific weight required?

Answer: Thank you for your question. That is a great question.

The short answer is no. And no one will weigh your shinai before your promotion exam.

The weights are there so competitors can fight fairly. And from that point of view, you should follow those regulations.

Now because of my shoulder problems I cut a 39 shinai shorter. But I am keeping the weight as the regulations say.

Hope this helps!
