Kendo Bushido Training (response)
by: Tadakatsu

Hi Silvana,

Just a few thoughts on your recent post:

>I want to go to Japan in this next two weeks…

That you have a strong deadline seems to indicate that you are trying to escape or avoid something. Samurai would not behave this way (from the Hagakure). If you want to live according to bushido, one aspect is to face your battles head on and heedlessly.

>live in dojo old school way live in be immersed into kendo and the way of the samurai in exchange for training

I have lived in Japan and my impression is that what you are looking for no longer exists in this world. My experience is certainly more limited that Imafuji Sensei’s, but I believe no modern kendo dojo works like this. Even if such a dojo exists, they teach kendo – not bushido. I know Imafuji Sensei prefers not to have religious talk here, but the ‘do’ character in ‘bushido’ is the same Chinese character as the ‘tao’ of Taoism – which is a religion. The earliest (and best in my opinion) translation of Lao-Tzu shows that he believed in a single Creator God upon whom his moral and ethical path (do) was based. You have to find the ‘do’ before kendo or bushido will have any meaning or truth for you.

Also, you do not have to be in Japan to grow in bushido. Warrior skills are physical (like in kendo), but the warrior ethic is internal and spiritual. There are many excellent books that are translations of samurai wisdom that you can study and begin applying to your life ("Bushido: The Warrior’s Code" by Inazo Nitobe is an excellent breakdown of the individual virtues of bushido, and he was a Christian as well (like Lao-Tsu, he realized that God is the ‘dao’). "The Unfettered Mind" and "The Hagakure" are classics for a reason.) In other words, you can cultivate bushido right where you are at.

>I Am a wounded warrior and my spirit need this.

It seems evident that your true issue is a spiritual one. Find the ‘do’ of kendo and bushido first. Japan is a wonderful place, but you don’t need to be there to find the True ‘do/dao’

Thank you for your message, Silvana. I can feel how enthusiastic you are from what you write. All I know what you would satisfy yourself is a tour like

First of all, I don’t really know you and introducing someone to others is a big responsibility in Japan now. You can imagine how serious it would be to introduce someone to a samurai dōjō.

You should find a place you study kendo in your area and then your teacher should introduce you to his teacher. I am sure eventually you should reach someone in Japan. That is a proper way to get yourself to a trust worthy sensei.

The tours I introduced above are done very well. So you will find it very useful.

Good Cuck!
