Bogu Simulation

Dear Imafuji Sensei,

Greetings!

First of all I would like to thank you for creating such a wonderful website about kendo! I have learned a lot and my knowledge in kendo has increased and especially helped in my training! Arigatou Gozaimasu!

Now on to my question,

I recently was given the chance to try jigeiko while wearing a bogu (since our kendo club has limited amounts of bogu). I just want to ask if there is a way to train my body to get used to its weight and the feeling of being constricted since I cannot swing as properly and move around as much when I’m wearing one.

I cannot borrow the bogu since there is an owner and he trains with it too and I don't have the finances to buy my own as of yet. Is there a way to simulate the feeling of wearing one or is there something I can do to get myself used to it? (Sorry if the question seems a bit vague)

Answer: thank you for your question. I cannot think of any ways to get used to the weight of bōgu. I think you'll get used to the weight as you train in bōgu.

I have some advices for you. I understand that you cannot purchase your own bogu right away, but if you use someone else's bogu you will develop bad habits because the bogu doesn't fit you.

The bogu has already shaped for the previous owner. What that mean is, the bogu is already shaped based on the habits the previous owner had.

That is a part of reason why it is hard for you to do what you're supposed to do. Simply it is not shaped for you.

The best advice I can give you is to wait until you get your own bogu and gradually you will get used to it.

I hope this helps.
