The first time I practiced in the Shudokan dojo in Osaka Castle's park, I was introduced to an older gentleman who was a 3-dan. I was surprised because in most cases in Japan 3-dan is something you get in your college days.
I asked him for his story and what he told me was really wonderful. He'd always wanted to practice kendo as a child and adult but never had the opportunity or time. He took up kendo when he retired from his work at the age of 65.
So _do_ start and I hope you enjoy the journey. Ron
