Restarting Kendo from childhood?

Hello I came across your website in the process of my interest in restarting Kendo. I would have to say because it's been so long, I would probably be a novice level again. I am coming to the end of my medical school training/ as a second career finally and with that, some time to pick up things I have had to put aside for a long time.

I am looking to find a school in the area that is reputable. I was wondering if you are aware of / can recommend a school or program in the Dallas Fort Worth area? I am not from here originally, so I don't have the ties to the area whereas I did back home in Chicago, so I am not confident in finding a school/teacher on my own or by word of mouth. In Chicago I was enrolled at a Kendo school with several Korean and Japanese Teachers and that is how my mother found the school, but I am second generation, and the Korean community here is quite scattered so that doesn't seem to be a good way to find a school here.

I'm a woman and 5'3 in fairly good shape and have spent a lot of time outdoors and hiking but have not attended a class since I was a child. I would also like to say that I really appreciate the materials and website you have here with so much information. Reading some of the novice and beginner information I find some old knowledge returning to me surprisingly.
Any guidance or recommendations would be very helpful,
thank you

Kendo-Guide.Com: Thank you very much for your message. It makes me very happy to hear that you are interested in restarting kendo
after a long time.

Congratulations on coming to the end of your medical school training. That is a huge achievement. I understand you must be very busy, but it is wonderful that you want to make time for kendo again.

Do not worry about being a novice level again. In kendo, we are always learning, no matter how long we practice. You mentioned that "old knowledge" is returning to you while reading my website. That is very common! Your body remembers more than you think. Even if you feel like a beginner, your past experience will help you. My website is actually made to help adult beginners and people returning to kendo, so please use it as much as you like.

Regarding a school in the Dallas Fort Worth area, I personally do not know the local dojos there very well. However, I can introduce you to the Houston Kenshikan (https://www.houstonkenshikan.com/).

I met their members when I attended a seminar in Texas, and they were very nice people. I recommend contacting them to ask for their advice on which dojo in Dallas would be good for you to try. I think starting your search through a trusted group like them is a good idea.

Once you have a list of dojos to check out, I suggest you visit them to watch a practice. This is the best way to see the atmosphere and the teachers. Since you are not from the area, meeting the people there will help you feel more comfortable.

I am glad my website is helpful to you. My mission is to share the knowledge I received from my teachers with sincerity, so hearing your feedback means a lot to me.

Good luck with finishing your medical training and your return to kendo!
