What should I get as a beginner?

by Sam willingham

I'm thinking about starting kendo in the next couple of months. I don't have any of the gear yet because I want the opinion of someone that has been doing it for a year or so.

I know I need a shinai for the first class but I'm not sure about what else I might need. My teacher is going to be Hiro Imafuji in Indiana.

Kendo-Guide.Com: Thank you for your post. I am sorry for the delay of my reply. If I am going to be your teacher, you can email me directly :)

If you come to the dōjō where I instruct (Mudokwan, Indianapolis), the owner of the dōjō will ask you to try kendō for one month. Usually this is what he does. At this point, you should come to training with comfortable cloths so you can move and sweat.

You do not need a shinai either. I will let you use a bokuto that we have at the dōjō.

See you soon!
