Validity of strikes in sparing.

by Agchan
(South Korea)

What elements decide about the validity of a strike in a sparring? E.g. what is important in, say, a kote strike to score a point?

Answer:

1. You need to hit a target.

2. You need to have Ki-Ken-Tai-Icchi. This is a must have.

3. Show zanshin.

That is why just hitting a target is not enough. Also once you come to know about seme, this will be a very important element of a valid cut (yukō datotsu). This is something that you have to become certain level to understand.

You should have at least 3 of the above-mentioned.

Hope this helps.
