Training alone?!
by: kendoka wanna be

I'm a kid who can't afford to buy a bogu but I bought a shinai.

I plan on going to a kendo club when I'm 17, which is nearly 2 years and a month away!

I'm trying to train alone but i know nothing about the rules or how to strike and block attacks.

Although I think I'm good at swinging the shinai, i doubt I can tell if swing it wrong.

All my trainings are from online videos but there are little on how the lessons are conducted.

Are there any videos on how a club conducts their lesson? Something like what they do every lessons?

Kendo-Guide.Com:   Thank you for your post. It is very important to know what you are doing before you develop nasty habits that you won't be able to fix.

If you go to this page, you can get some ideas of what's going on at the kendo dojo.

Kendo Basics: Kendo Beginners Guide

You do not need a bogu set until you learn the solid basics. As long as you learn the basics thoroughly now, you should be alright.

If you can attend a class now, you should.  If you cannot afford a bogu set, you don't have to buy one until you can.

Many of my students did not buy a bogu set for more than one year.

The longer you do the basics, the more quickly you can improve your kendo. And the basics will never be completed.

It does not matter how high you become in kendo, you will still study the basics.

Hope this helps.
