What are ways you can get points in a match?

Answer: Not sure what you mean by “ways” we can get points in a match but I will do my best to explain.

We have mainly 4 targets, men (head), kote (writs), do (waist) and tsuki (throat). You must strike these targets. On tsuki, you must stab the protector of the throat.

Only hitting these targets are not enough. You must satisfy requirements.

- Strike with the monouchi part of the shinai (monouchi is usually about 20 to 30 cm from the tip of the sword).

- Hasuji (the direction of the blade) must be correct

- Ki ken tai no icchi (harmony or integration of internal energy, sword and body must be performed)

- A Strike must be completed by zanshin (zanshin is physical and/or mental awareness)

These are the requirements of a valid cut. However, depending on the competitors level, shinpan (referees) give points more easily or difficult. For example, kids competitions are of course easier while the 8-dan competitions involves more to the requirements.

I must say that it is hard for people who do not do kendo to understand what’s going on. And even for kendo practitioners it is very difficult to know what is going on in higher level competitions.

Hope this helps.
